Archosaurs (meaning "ruling lizard") are a group of reptiles that evolved about 250 million years ago in the late Permian period, and dominated the Earth during the Mesozoic Era. All have gone extinct except some crocodilians and birds.

The archosaurs include the crocodilians , pterosaurs , thecodonts, dinosaurs , and birds .

Archosaurs are diapsids (having two holes in the rear upper part of their skulls and two holes behind the eyes), have teeth set into sockets, have lighter, more narrow skulls, have pointed snouts, and have a new type of ankle joint.
